Mely - Portrait Of A Porcelain Doll
Mely is an Austrian band that has released their 4th album last March. The name derives from the word melancholy but according to the biography, this doesn’t mean that they don’t know how to rock. Well let’s find out what these metalheads have to say with Portrait Of A Porcelain Doll.
Within seconds of the first song it’s pretty obvious that the sound of Mely lies somewhere between gothic, dark, progressive, doom metal. If you’d throw Katatonia, My Dying Bride, Anathema and Paradise Lost into a blender you would have a nice approach to Mely. The entire album has this dark anguished atmosphere that is so typical for all the bands within the genres.
The idea behind Mely is to create music that's vivid and fresh enough to become a very pleasant listening. The only problem is that Mely doesn’t manage to hold my attention during the entire album. Especially ‘Hell Low’ and ‘Sweet Six Feet’ are horrible examples of boring songs. Luckily it isn’t all just rubbish. With ‘Grown For Doom´ and ´Bricks Against Porcelain Dolls´ they manage to create a dark atmosphere that grabs you by your throat.
Although they did show that they do know how to write some good songs, I’m not completely convinced by these Austrian metal heads. Portrait Of A Porcelain Doll sure has it’s moments but those are not quite numerous enough to made the entire album entertaining. Still I would recommend the fans of the mentioned bands to check this one out because you might like it.
